Sidney Allen Watkins was born on July 8th, 1944 to Anita Powell and Sidney A. Watkins in Los Angeles, California. Family and friends called all knew him as "Allen". He grew up in a full house of brothers and sisters. Sister Luana Valentin, Frnaces Watkins; brothers, Fredrick Watkins and Patrick E. Morgan. He graduated high school and went to the United States Army where he served as a medic.
In 1969 Allen met Brenda Sue Doresy who went by "Suzie" and in just a few years later in 1975 would run off to Las Vegas along with Allen's mother Anita to be happily married for many years. Allen became a property manager and also a small business owner of General Janitorial Service & Maintenance where he held several contacts with big business and also including a couple social security buildings in Crenshaw & Inglewood, California.
In 1985 Suzie and Allen were blessed with the arrival of their son Derrick Shayne Watkins. Later in 1996 Allen & Suzie would take in 3 family members that needed help. Whoever in the family or friends that need help and sound straight forward advice, Allen was there. Regardless if he understood what you wanted or agreed if you were passionate about something he would stand proudly in your corner.
Allen was a simple man, your t shirt and jeans kind of guy. Loved watching sports and workings on his cars. He was a quite and private man as well but his heart was open as a clear blue sky. He also was looked at as a father figure to many others that had a deep respect for him. During the his later years from early 2016 Allen would battle with COPD. On the evening of September 16th, 2019. He leaves to mourn many family members and friends that all cherished him dearly.
Allen will be truly missed by everyone that loved and knew him for the man that he was. Our hearts will all hold a special place that is reserved just for him.
TRIBUTE
Dad you were my mentor, teacher, coach, support, best friend, and more importantly my Father. I remember riding on your shoulders at Disneyland, going to karate practice, throwing the football for hours. You were my own personal Superman who was strong and could fix anything or try to. Getting lost on your famous shortcuts with Mom and driving you guys crazy with my Michael Jackson music. Yelling at me to always say "Please and Thank you everyone!" So, Thank you for being my Dad and Please tell Mom I said Hi when you see her!
Love you always and forever
Your son Derrick
Uncle Allen, I will miss you dearly. You were my second "dad". There was no such thing as you never being in my life. You were an encourager.....you told me if I learned how to spell my name you would get me anything I wanted....a treasured engraved bracelet with my name put an ear to ear grin on my face . I will always remember the games of dodge ball in the parking lot on Virgil as well as riding in the infamous GTO. I will always remember what you called the "Watkins Test".....you asked me "do you have blond hair on your arm?" I said "yes" and you said ," that means you are a Watkins" . I was so proud. Thank you for the Saturdays you gave up to move me. Thank you for believing in me always. Thank you for many talks and your ever response of " it will be alright".
My heart is divided into many parts. You were the final piece of a special division of my heart.I felt it collapse....and having to face the fact that only time will heal seems unfair. Now I turn towards my heart and say
......It is alright ....l love you dearly Uncle Allen
Love, your girl Andriette
