Gerald “Jerry” M. Smith

On the evening of May 17, 2022, Gerald passed away at the Kindred Hospital, in Baldwin Park, California, after battling with pneumonia and heart failure.

Gerald was born on February 24, 1942, in Corning, New York. He was the first child of Melvin and Lucille Smith.

Gerald always loved music and taught himself to play the piano when he was eight. He joined the school band in Corning, and graduated at NHS High School, in 1960. After that, perceiving his love for music joined Fredonia School of Music in New York for one year. Then, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii for three years. He attended RCA School of Electronics in New York City, graduating with high honors.

He decided to stay in the Service as a Reserve, and later he joined the National Guard.

Gerald enjoyed spending time with his grandparents at their cottage in Seneca Lake, New York. He also enjoyed playing the piano, camping, and bicycling. When his daughter Anna was born, he loved spending time with her, and with the rest of his family.

His sister Barbara referred to his brother Gerald as a walking encyclopedia. She is right about that. We all that knew him know that he was very knowledgeable and detailed.

Gerald’s love for music took him to record many of his piano recitals. He loved all classical music, as well as popular music. His favorites among others were Tony Bennett, and Lady Gaga.

Gerald was preceded in death by his wife Aura “Auri” I. Smith; daughter Anna Smith, parents Melvin and Lucille Smith.

Gerald is survived by his sister Barbara J. Smith Coles, by his brother Gordon Smith, by his sister-in-law Lorraine Smith, by his nieces and nephews, and by his stepson Octavio Rosengrant.

Gerald will rest in peace together with his wife, who passed away on February 20, 2006, at the Riverside National Cemetery, located at 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA 92518.
